Victor Valdes still has not given up hope of moving from Old Trafford in the summer

Manchester United goalkeeper Victor Valdes still has not given up hope of moving from Old Trafford in the summer.

This is despite the club parting company with manager Louis van Gaal. The Dutchman was responsible for bringing Valdes to Old Trafford, but the pair almost immediately fell out with each other.

Valdes is unhappy at being rushed back from a long-term anterior cruciate ligament injury while van Gaal has complained that the former Barcelona goalkeeper has not been fit enough to even consider rehabilitation. After spending a short time away from United on a loan spell, Valdes returned to the club amidst uncertain future.

United have made it clear that they do not want to keep the player, who is approaching the end of his career. He has been indirectly told to look for a new club. The player has been negotiating with several clubs from across the world. However, he is thought to favour a move to Spanish outfit Espanyol. This would see him return to Barcelona, although it may mean playing for the archrivals of his former club. Valdes came through the ranks at Barcelona before going on to lift numerous trophies in a decade at the Camp Nou. It remains to be seen if he will want to alienate the Barcelona supporters by playing for their archrivals.

Valdes’ position at the club may not have changed even after United have appointed José Mourinho as the new manager. Mourinho knows Valdes from his time at Barcelona as a translator, but the former Barcelona goalkeeper was almost too young to be in the memory. It is highly unlikely that Valdes will get game time at Old Trafford since David de Gea has been the mainstay by a long distance. De Gea electing to stay at United has effectively ended the hopes of Valdes becoming a first-team regular.
