Boro were relegated back to the Championship after an underwhelming season. Valdes had agreed a two year deal with the club when they were promoted but he agreed to cancel the remaining 12 months deal upon relegation.

Boro lost their top two keepers in Valdes and Brad Guzan. Guzan is set to resume in the MLS after agreeing terms with Atlanta United. Valdes has been linked with new league boys Newcastle and Huddersfield, aside one or two MLS sides.

Valdes played 28 Premier League games this season with Guzan featuring in the remaining ten. The third choice keeper DimiKonstantopoulos only featured once in the FA Cup game against Accrington Stanley. Konstantopoulos is expected to be promoted to second choice while Boro get another top keeper within their cut budget as first choice in the Championship.

Elsewhere, Man City signed Benfica keeper EdersonMoraes for £34.7 million. The deal is now the most expensive for a keeper. When Gianlugi Buffon moved from Parma to Juve, it was for £32.6 million but for a higher fee in Euro terms.

Ederson is expected to be the first choice keeper at Etihad with Claudio Bravo supporting him. Bravo replaced Valdes at Barcelona and he was in goal when Barca did the treble in 2015. Pep Guardiola brought him to England, spending £15.4 million, as replacement to Joe Hart. In the past season, the defence was quite terrible but he also had confidence issues that led to numerous mistakes. Bravo lost his spot to Willy Caballero, who was recently released.

Ederson would be the first choice while Bravo would back him up as Guardiola rotates in between competitions.
